Featured: Atomic accessibility model

“That’s the trap. Not incompetence — arithmetic. A centralized model isn’t failing because the people in it are bad at their jobs. It’s failing because the workload scales linearly with the size of the estate while the team doesn’t scale at all. You can hire your way out of it temporarily, and then the estate grows again, and you’re back where you started with a bigger payroll. This is the problem the Atomic Accessibility Model exists to solve. Not by working harder, but by changing who does the work and where it happens. It starts with the idea of Hub-and-Spoke.”

New to A11y

I’ve helped hire a lot of accessibility specialists. I detest when I’m asked to find a “unicorn,” the person who can do it all. However, what’s the common trait I see in the successful hires who build trust among teams? Technical understanding. It doesn’t mean they can do everything, but it does mean they can get to the why something won’t work, often tracing it to some technical reason. This article on why AI is exposing design’s craft crisis relates to accessibility too. Substitute design with accessibility and the parallels draw themselves.
